We Were Liars, by E. Lockhart

It’s true what everyone else says: Go into this book with no expectations.

In fact, you might want to stop reading this review right here. Just ignore everything else, and read this book. However, if you really, really want know about this book, by all means, continue.

We Were Liars is an exceptional piece of work. The whole book is subtly crafted with details that don’t make sense until the very end. It’s unique in every single way, and it will leave you sobbing in bed at 2 in the morning.

I have to admit, I went into this book expecting a cute romance story, not anything exceptional, but looking for a lighter read. That did not happen. The majority of this book follows the story of Cady, who after an accident that left her with amnesia, is struggling to remember what happened the day of the accident, two years ago. I refuse to tell you anymore, lest I ruin the story. 🙂

Lockhart has a gripping writing style, with short sentences and paragraphs. This is not for everyone, but it does give the book a rather poetic feel and further enhances the story.

My main advice for this book is to be patient. About 1/2 of the book is just day-to-day problems, it may not pull you in. In fact, even at the 3/4 mark, I was still prepared to give this book a 2.5 star rating. I assure you, it gets better, and you will not regret continuing.

This is a worthwhile read, give it a go. You might end up being one of those people sobbing uncontrollably and hugging this book to your chest.
